... is a much-cited demand in ancient Greek thought.
The demand to recognize oneself is probably the most important "thought-provoking impulse"that has ever been expressed. To recognize oneself with all its strengths and weaknesses, completely honestly and without judging to accept oneself as one is, not to look away when it hurts and not to become too arrogant when it is good for one.
To realize that nothing has ever been achieved by oneself, that life in itself is a gift for which one should be grateful. It also means: not to give up; to learn, not to take oneself too seriously and thereby gain true strength; to attain a humility by overcoming moral prejudices, which is not, however, submissiveness.
